Peter Kopelman

It is with great sadness that EASO announces the loss of our former society president, Peter Kopelman, highly regarded educator and obesity expert, who has died aged 70.

Dr Kopelman, who was a medical student at St George’s Hospital, University of London, became its principal, and we are very grateful for his contribution to obesity medicine and medical education. Professor Kopelman had a storied professional career, detailed here in the Lancet, the British Medical Journal and by the University of London and the UK General Medical Council.

Professor Jean-Michel Oppert comments:

“Peter was a great President of EASO and I am proud to have served as Treasurer during his mandate. Among many achievements, he implemented the idea of regional society representation with dedicated vice-presidents for EASO regions across Europe. This approach was well aligned with Peter’s attention to the needs of others — of patients as well as colleagues —and of his concern that their voices would be heard. His “Clinical Obesity in Adults and Children” remains the key reference textbook for many in the field”.

Professor Kopelman will be missed across the entire EASO community.
