1st Live Webinar of the Thematic Network DisQo: anti-discrimination & health equity – The importance of language & definitions

Thursday, Jan 19 2023 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Racism and discrimination have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. Many correlational studies have found that citizens who experience discrimination and racism are at higher risk for CVD, hypertension, diabetes and stroke. People who face discrimination are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges. Nonetheless, this issue is largely unrecognised and unaddressed in European public health. This is the driving force behind the Thematic Network DisQo, bringing together people and organisations with the shared ambition to address structural racism and discrimination to help improve health equity.

In a series of three webinars DG Santé, EPHA and colleagues will discuss and delve deeper into key topics that were identified by network members during the initial DisQo meeting including, for example, for example the importance of a clear language and definitions, the evidence-base and disaggregated equality data, the sharing of best practices at different government levels, and the need to break down silos between sectors. EASO policy lead Jacqueline Bowman Busatto moderates the audience discussion.
